The Château
The Château de Viviers, listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments, as we see it, was built at the beginning of the 17th century in the middle of the famous Chablis vineyard. Contemporary of the magnificent Château d’Ancy-le-Franc, not far from there, it is probable (the archives of the Château and the village were unfortunately destroyed in 1905) that its overlord lord had built the Chôteau of Viviers, of a soberer plan, more to the French taste, out of consideration for a vassal, one of the “Gray Musketeers of the Queen” (Anne of Austria). – gray, because they rode gray horses – as a thank you for important service.
The Domaine
One of the 5 Chablisian wine châteaux.
The Viviers vineyard dates back to the 13th century.
Creation of the Domain by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Pontigny, together with that of a fishpond.
16th century, the domain is bought by the Sieur Guillaume Budé.
In 1725, the wine of Château de Viviers was served at the wedding of Louis XV and Marie Leczinska, and today still collects gold or silver medals at the highest wine events.
At the start of the 20th century, the Château was sold to the Marquis de Traynel.
In 1978, the Domain was acquired by the Lefébure family. The plots are rented to the Albert Bichot company.
In October 2019, takeover of the exploitation of the Domain by Arnould Lefébure.

Our quest for excellence

Amongst its practices, the conversion to organic farming concerns the entire Domaine, which uses no pesticides or herbicides, and seeks to reduce the use of copper and sulphur to a minimum. We follow biodynamic practices and have been awarded the “land and wings” label, 300 meters of hedges have been planted, the vines have a plant cover, nearly 30 birdhouses have been placed in the plots and an agroforestry project, unique in Burgundy and probably in France, linking hundred-year-old oaks to young vines is ongoing.
The quest for excellence is the moto of the Domain Château de Viviers: visits and discussions with the best worldwide Domains (Kistler Vineyards, Sonomai, Weingutbam Stein, Domaine de la République de Genève, Comte Liger-Belair, Château de Beru, Denis Pommier, Raveneau, etc.). Collaboration with the best experts to help him (Elisa Errera, Paul Krug, Herody, Masson, Eric Petiot, etc.).
